Students in Mrs. Castellano's 9th and 10th grade English classes participated in the annual Stony Brook Japan Center Essay Competition, which is sponsored by Canon USA and supported by the Consulate General of Japan in New York. The contest asked students to write about "one or more aspects of Japan including art, culture, tradition, values, philosophy, history, society, politics, business, and technology in relation to their personal views, experiences, and/or future goals." Freshmen Madison Gies, Rhea Likoka and Sophomore Mya Passanisi were among the contest's 20 semi-finalists. Click here to read more about this contest and see a full list of regional winners.
Writing contests such as this one offer students an opportunity to sharpen their writing skills by responding to a specific theme or prompt. This can benefit students by pushing them slightly out of their comfort zones and help them develop new skills.
